Questions to ask an accessories manufacturer

Questions to ask an accessories manufacturer

The right questions surface the right partner. A manufacturer who answers openly and specifically is usually one you can trust with a production run. One who is vague or evasive is telling you something too. Here are the questions worth asking before you commit, grouped by what they reveal.

Questions about capability and categories

Start with whether they can actually make what you need. Ask which accessory categories they specialise in, whether they have made products like yours before, and whether they can handle your full range or just part of it. Ask to see examples. A manufacturer who knows your category will spot problems early and save you costly mistakes.

Questions about minimums and pricing

Ask what the minimum order quantity is for your product, and what drives it. Ask how the price changes at different volumes, what is included in the quote, and what sits outside it, like freight or duties. Clear, confident answers here are a good sign. Vague or shifting pricing is a warning.

Questions about samples and development

Ask how the sampling process works, how many rounds are typical, what samples cost, and whether they can develop from a sketch or a reference if you do not have a tech pack. The sampling process is where quality is locked in, so a manufacturer who takes it seriously is one worth having.

Questions about quality control

Ask how they control quality, what they inspect, and how they handle a run that does not meet standard. Ask whether they work to an agreed, documented standard. Claims of quality are easy. Ask for the process behind them.

Questions about lead times and reliability

Ask for realistic lead times from sign-off to delivery, how reliably they hit them, and how they communicate if something slips. Ask whether they can support reorders and keep them consistent. Reliability is what you will depend on every season, so probe it properly.

Questions about IP and confidentiality

Ask who owns the design and the tech pack, how they protect your confidentiality, and whether they are willing to sign an NDA. Your designs are your business, and a trustworthy partner will have no problem with these questions.
